Hey! Welcome to my blog!
I’m Elizabeth Varghese, a junior at Mountain House High School. I am very passionate about this initiative, as it is meant to empower young girls (non binary and trans inclusive) to pursue a career in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Women make up only about 28% in STEM occupations, and are highly underrepresented in these fields. In fast growing and demanding fields such as Computer Science and Engineering, women make up only 20%.
But why is there this lack of gender diversity in STEM?
Studies show that as education levels advance the percentage of women involved in STEM fields decrease. This causes young girls to have fewer role models and examples. Historically, STEM has been male dominated so fewer girls feel accepted in these environments. So when a female enters a STEM major or occupation , specially engineering and computer science, they face many stereotypes which causes them to not want to pursue the field.
We as a community can rid these stereotypes and eliminate the gender gap in STEM. We should realize our potential, strive for our goals, and become amazing women in STEM!
I believe by sharing stories of women and girls in STEM, you can get inspired and be motivated to begin your own journey. Highlighting these amazing women and their stories will give you a role model to follow! I will also be providing tips, current STEM topics and controversies (gender pay gap), and different careers/majors to pursue! If you want a blog on a specific topic be sure to contact me via email or social media. Through the classes and webinars I host, you will be able to be engaged and be excited about your STEM future!
Thanks for reading! <3
